In writing academic research papers, and in a number of literary publications, MLA formatting is generally accepted as the standard for formatting papers by most fields in the humanities. The MLA general guidelines for MLA formatting that are included here are based on the latest editions MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. If you're a student, it is important to remember that your professor or department may differ slightly from these guidelines. Ultimately, you are responsible for how you format your paper and how you cite your references. We advise you to consult with your academic instructor before formatting your paper based on these guidelines. We are also ready to Help for MLA Referencing Style with our professional writers.
Here are Some General MLA Guidelines for Structuring Your Paper
First, choose a standard font such as Times New Roman, or a font otherwise prescribed by your instructor, in 12-point size. According to the MLA general guidelines, only the first page, or the MLA title page, should include the whole MLA format heading. Throughout the whole document, all margins, including the top, bottom, left and right sides are set to one inch. The first word of each paragraph should be indented by half an inch or 5 spaces; paragraphs that begin with quotations should be indented an inch from the left margin. It is not necessary in MLA to add extra white space between the heading and the title as well as between the title and the body of the paragraph. Rather, ensure that each first word of every paragraph is indented by one half inch. You can do this by pressing the tab button.
The MLA format heading consists of your name, the name of your instructor, the title of your course, and the date. This collection of data is aligned to the left margin. Below this, the title of your research paper is aligned to the center of the page. The title in the MLA format heading is not capitalized, underlined, or put in quotation marks. Rather, only the first, last, and important words of the title are capitalized.
The Benefits of MLA Format
A major benefit of having MLA format guidelines is that they provide order and structure for academic research. Thus, it would be difficult to read papers or grade them accordingly. Having a set of rules by which to govern citation and format prevent student papers from looking chaotic---chaos being something that can easily happen when there are no rules by which to write and research. Another benefit of having format guidelines is that format guidelines provide students with the exact answers of how to do their academic research.
MLA format guidelines are very tedious indeed and span a long list of formatting needs. However, they are essential to great research papers of liberal arts and humanities studies. Without a proper formatting context, students cannot understand the liberal arts and humanities scholars. And a research paper within a given tradition without a proper contextual frame for it (format) spells nothing short of chaos.
