About the Author

Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961), was a noted American journalist, novelist, short story writer and sportsman. His "iceberg theory" style of writing became the basis for many 20th century fiction. Plot Summary

The story is about Santiago, other Cuban fisherman, who has not caught asingle fish since 84 days. The sea has become unlucky and even his apprentice, Mandolin, is told, by his family, to look for lucky fisherman. Though Mandolin continues to support him as he cherishes the old man and the life lessons imparted by him. Determined to change his luck Santiago is convinced to go as far as Gulf Stream. Here, he hooks a giant marlin. He struggles with the fish for 3 days. Santiago admires the strength, faithfulness and dignity of the fish. He finally catches the marlin and lashes it to the boat.

But the efforts of Santiago goes into a naught when sharks are attracted to the tethered marlin. The sharks eats it up and only it's skeleton is left. The tired Santiago, on returning to the harbour, goes to his home and sleeps.

People then find skeleton of fish hanged to the boat of Santiago. On the other hand, Maolin is relived to see Santiago alive and they make plans to go fishing together.
